Engineers hired by Youngstown councilman will not be permitted in Realty Building

YOUNGSTOWN - The decision to demolish the Realty Building following the deadly explosion last month is final.
That's according to Youngstown Property Management and YO Properties 47 LLC.
Additionally, this means that no engineering firms specializing in restoration, like the one hired by Councilman Julius Oliver, will be permitted on to the site to run tests.
Structural Systems Repair Group, the Cincinnati-based company hired by Oliver, said they believed they could stabilize the building.
Oliver, along with Councilman Mike Ray, hired the firm and paid them approximately $5,000 out of their discretionary funds. Those are funds each council member is allocated to use for needs in their ward. As of last week, Youngstown's finance director said this money would not be reimbursed.
Oliver previously told 21 News they would be on site Thursday to study the building's movement to see if it could be saved.
Our chief priority in the demolition planning is to execute the safest and fastest plan to reopen the area for downtown businesses and residents," Youngstown Property Management said in a statement to 21 News. "Demolition was a very hard decision but it is the correct decision and final decision."
When reached Wednesday night on the matter, Oliver said "no comment."
