Some people were jarred from their sleep early Thursday by an explosion that shook homes in parts of the Valley.

Just after 3 a.m., call after call came into the 21 Newsroom from people on Youngstown’s Westside and Northside reporting a loud “boom”. 

Dispatchers in Girard sent police and firefighters to the Vallourec Steel mill on Route 422 to investigate.

Authorities learned that a slag pot containing molten metal exploded after coming in contact with water.

At this point, no injuries have been reported.

Posts on the 21 WFMJ Facebook reported feeling or hearing the blast as far away as Poland and Struthers.

One woman wrote that she thought it was her father falling out of bed.
