21 WFMJ archives  / July 17, 1986 | Ursuline nuns from Toledo visited the Ursuline Motherhouse on Shields Road 38 years ago to mark 450 years of the Ursuline Order. Sharing a laugh were Sister Mary Lawrence, left of Toledo, and Sister Jean Eskay, a retired teacher from Ursuline High and a member of the order for 61 years.

1999: Poland Police Chief Russell D. Beatty says the village's deployment of a portable truck scale has resulted in 29 of the 30 trucks stopped being cited for overweight loads. As word gets out, truck traffic through Poland has been reduced.

Longtime defense lawyer Don L. Hanni Jr. says former Mahoning County Sheriff Phil Chance should never have taken the stand in his own defense during his trial in Cleveland. Chance opened himself up to questioning on his meetings with mob boss Lenny Strollo, which Hanni said led to Chance being found guilty.

Austintown officials are boarding up a house on Rosemont Avenue where a 41-year-old woman and 150 cats lived in filth. 

 

1984: The Trumbull County Democratic Central Committee approves a bylaw change over the objection of party Chairman Dr. William Timmins that will require a secret ballot when electing officers or conferring endorsements. Previously, the method of voting was at the discretion of the chairman.

Ohio Secretary of State Sherrod Brown says he's not a supporter of a suggestion by Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young that the nation switch from Tuesday voting to weekend voting.

James L. D'Eramo, superintendent of Hubbard schools, is named assistant superintendent of the Austintown Local School District. 

 

1974: Supt. Robert L. Pegues proposes a plan whereby a Youngstown public school pupil could request a transfer to another school district offering a course he wants or merely to improve racial balance.

The Trumbull County Board of Education proposes the consolidation of four local school districts: Southington, Bristol, Farmington, and Bloomfield-Mespo. Two districts' boards appear resigned to the effort, but some opposition is expected.

A temperature of 47 degrees at the Youngstown Municipal Airport sets a record low for the date. 

 

1949: Only a dozen Republican senators are poised to join Ohio Sen. Robert Taft in voting against the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The first of more than 200 benches that the C&J Service Co. erects at bus stops in the city is in place at the Mahoning County Courthouse. Among the first to try it out were Mrs. Edward Moegerle, Dolores Tessone, William Flad, and Patricia McCraey.

Eli Toda, 19, of Hubbard, is accidentally shot in the hip while target shooting with three companions along Red Run Creek.
