YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Mahoning County Commissioners have reached a $7 million agreement with the Western Reserve Port Authority (WRPA) for an expanded veterans service center in Youngstown.

The agreement was for the renovation of the property located on Belmont Avenue, which was purchased by WRPA from Steward Health.

Mahoning County Commissioner Anthony Traficanti tells 21 News this project is part of the effort to revitalize the upper part of the Belmont Corridor.

"It's going to expand and give more space to our veterans. Plus the location of this facility ... is right across the street from the federal veterans center. So there is more of a connection there between where the two facilities are located," Traficanti said.

The project will cost $7 million. It will be paid for in part through a $650,000 grant from the state. Traficanti tells us he's hoping more money comes from the federal government as well.

Traficanti says there will be other financing through WRPA and there will be private donations towards the project as well.

Traficanti tells 21 News he hopes construction begins by the end of the year or the beginning of 2025 at the latest.
