Vienna Township residents will have a chance to learn more about the trustee’s plans to use traffic cameras.

Trustees in the financially strapped community are holding a public hearing on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 6:30 pm at Mathews High School Cafeteria to talk about what they say is “public education” related to the use of traffic law photo-monitoring devices.

An email from the township says the cafeteria was chosen as a meeting venue to accommodate larger than usual attendance.

Trustees also approved language in June to contract with a company for speed cameras that could raise an estimated $40,000 to $100,000 per month for the township.

The Ohio Auditor declared Vienna Township a fiscal emergency after tax and township funds were reported missing earlier in 2024.

The auditor's report found that township emergency services caused the bulk of Vienna's deficit, stating that the township was $1,459,267 in the hole.

The township's financial issues have led to layoffs within the fire and police departments.

A criminal investigation has been ongoing since the missing funds were first discovered after township employees, including the Vienna fire and police departments, went unpaid.
