1999: Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church makes a required $12,500 payment to complete the purchase of the former Princeton Junior High School from the Youngstown City School District.

At least two local scoutmasters say they aren't pleased with a New Jersey Supreme Court ruling that Boy Scouts of America cannot dismiss Scout leaders solely because they are gay.

The Canfield 13-14-year-old softball team wins the state Little League championship with back-to-back victories over Malvern, 4-3 and 5-2.   

1984: Willie Harris, a 38-year-old inmate in the Mahoning County Jail, is in guarded condition in South Side Hospital with injuries sustained when a rope fashioned of blankets broke during an attempted escape, dropping him 50 feet to a concrete parking lot.

In a speech to the American Bar Association, Chief Justice Warren Burger says lawyers struggling in a crowded profession sell their services like ad men and soliciting business in disasters, where "liability is clear or in no great doubt."

Dassin Stella Dora, a standard poodle owned by Freeman Dickey of Medina, is best in show at the Mahoning-Shenango Kennel Club Dog Show at the Canfield Fairgrounds. 

1974: Unlike a sluggish national economy, downtown East Palestine is doing quite well, with six new stores opening. Two industrial plants, L.W. Nash and M&W Electric, are expanding.

The Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce recommends that Youngstown proceed with repairs to the Lake Milton dam as soon as possible but notes that the city should not have to bear the entire cost.

Newly released Watergate transcripts contradict President Nixon's denial of his involvement in the affair. The president is using some of his Republican support in Congress. 

1949: Orders for August deliveries boost operations of steel plants in the Youngstown district by 11 percent, bringing local operations to 88 percent of capacity.

Mahoning County Sheriff Paul Langley remains on vacation at a cabin at Lake Stafford near Ravenna, ignoring reports that 11 slot machines are whirling away in the back room of the Wickliffe Coliseum bingo hall.

A two-day strike by truck drivers serving eight of Youngstown's wholesale grocery houses ends with both sides agreeing to seven-cent-an-hour raises.
