HUBBARD, Ohio - A petition to overturn the City of Hubbard's ban on recreational marijuana sales has reached enough signatures to be filed and appear on the November 2024 ballot.

Trumbull County Board of Elections Director Stephanie Penrose tells 21 News the petition required 100 signatures to be filed and 285 signatures were turned in. Of those, 194 signatures were valid, meaning the petition nearly doubled its signature requirement.

Penrose says there will be a meeting Friday where the issue is expected to be certified. If it is, voters in Hubbard will get to decide the fate of recreational marijuana sales in the city.

One dispensary in Hubbard that was teed up to begin selling recreational marijuana once sales became legal last week was A Cut Above (ACA). However, Hubbard City Council passed a ban on recreational sales before that could happen.

ACA previously wrote an open letter to the city stating if the ban was not overturned, they won't be able to keep their doors open.

21 News reached out to ACA for comment on the petition receiving enough signatures to be filed, and is waiting to hear back.
