You might have heard the phrase, "farm to table", but what about "farm to brewery"?

"We started in the Spring of 2016. We started out with a spring variety and it did very well for us so we decided that we think we can grow this stuff," says Sam Yarian, Owner of Yarian Family Farms and Yarian Quality Malts.

On about 100 acres at Yarian Family Farms in New Waterford, crops like corn, soybean, and barley grow. And to rip on the old adage, if you grow it they will brew.

"We just grow one variety of barley and then we get different varieties of malt like pilsner, pale, Vienna, Munich, whatever style of malt we want to end with," says Yarian.

Once the barley is cleaned, it's ready to be sent to the malt facility. After a multi-step process, the barley then takes on different flavor profiles and is used in a variety of beer styles depending on the recipe. From there it's ready to be sold to area breweries. Beers like Bridfish Brewing Company's Too Hip Too Sip feature barley grown on Yarian's farm.

Sam's family farm in New Waterford started growing barley as an ask from one or two local breweries back in 2016. Now that partnership with local breweries encompasses a 45-mile radius and you can find the barley grown on this family farm in close to 10 breweries across the area

"I love working with other breweries and I love going in when some of the patrons are in the breweries and you can talk with them. You can tell them, this is where the malt came from or this is the guy that grows the barley and it's a great experience we really enjoy it," adds Yarian.
