Prosecutor opposes parole of man convicted of killing pregnant wife at Weathersfield McDonald's
The Trumbull County Prosecutor's Office has expressed opposition to parole for a man convicted of killing his pregnant wife while she was working at a Weathersfield Township McDonald's.
Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins is opposing the parole of inmate Paul Smith, who is currently serving a sentence of 18 years to life in prison. He's served just under 37 years in prison so far.
The crime took place in July of 1987 when Smith smashed a window of a McDonald's restaurant in Weathersfield township where his wife Gina worked as a manager.
Several employees were inside with witnesses saying everyone was "terrorized and threatened" by Smith.
Prosecutors say Smith chased Gina down and shot her in the head "execution style" at "point-blank range."
Watkins's letter includes a statement from one of the employees who was working at the McDonald's when the crime took place and vividly remembers what happened.
"I was 20 years old at the time. The look on [Smith's] face was as if he had no soul. When Gina fell to the ground, he looked at me and grinned. I closed my eyes and prayed because I thought he would shoot me as well because I witnessed what he had done," said witness Anita Babcock.
"The horrendous facts and details in this case scream out to the reader, as they should, and that is why the circumstances of Gina's odyssey of terror and death matter under Ohio law when the offender is serving an indeterminate life sentence and is eligible for release on parole," Watkins said.
Smith is up for parole in September.
