Federal charge filed against suspect in multi-jurisdictional police chase with 88 pounds of methamphetamine
A federal charge has been filed against a man who led police on a chase through multiple jurisdictions ending in Canfield.
According to a criminal complaint, 36-year-old Jeffrey Battle of Phoenix, Arizona is facing one federal charge of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. This is in addition to a charge of possession of drugs filed in Canfield.
These charges stem from a high speed chase that began in Youngstown and led officers through multiple jurisdictions and ultimately ended in Canfield.
Police say they found 88 pounds of methamphetamine in the car as well as a kilo of cocaine. All of this had a combined street value of about $105,000.
According to the complaint, the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force (MVLETF) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) have been investigating Battle since April.
Police say he distributes "significant quantities" of narcotics in the Mahoning Valley area despite living in Arizona. Police say he was also known to do business in the Akron, Ohio and Erie, Pennsylvania areas.
According to the complaint, on the day of the chase, Battle was seen entering a Ross Clothing Store in Boardman and leaving with a newly-purchased duffle bag followed by making a few more stops including Walmart and a home in Austintown.
Later that night, police spotted Battle at a Hubbard truck stop walking with a large duffle bag. Police say they continued to follow him and conducted a traffic stop upon witnessing a traffic violation.
That's when the chase began, leading officers through the areas of Shields Road and Meridian Road. Police say at one point they lost sight of the vehicle, but soon found it abandoned near Dorado Beach and Shields Road.
Battle is due back in court Friday, August 23 for a preliminary hearing in Canfield.
