Youngstown Mayor provides update on downtown one week after reopening
It's been one week since the heart of Downtown Youngstown reopened following a near three-month-long closure due to an explosion at the Realty Building.
Now Youngstown Mayor Tito Brown is reminding folks that they can come back down and enjoy the businesses they once loved like the DoubleTree Hotel, The Federal restaurant, the Covelli Centre, the Oh Wow! Science Center, etc.
Mayor Brown discussed customers restoring relationships with the various businesses who have suffered during the construction, as well as the aftermath of the explosion.
"We want to restore our relationships. As a customer, I want to restore my relationships with my downtown favorite smoked wings or edamame hummus I get from downtown," Mayor Brown said.
"We want everybody to think about those nostalgic moments when you came downtown and wanted to have a good time and downtown was the place to be. We want to reimagine downtown and take it back to that era," added First Ward Councilman Julius Oliver.
Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber President and CEO Guy Coviello also made an appearance to talk about the future of downtown Youngstown and future economic development for the area.
Coviello highlighted the recent opening of a Zoetic Global refrigerant plant in downtown, as well as Steelite International moving its corporate headquarters downtown.
Coviello believes both of these factors can attract even more economic development opportunities to downtown Youngstown.
"Very shortly we'll be announcing some international trade missions to downtown and we'll use downtown as a hub for visiting the Mahoning Valley. And we're going to also look at how downtown fits into the housing strategy ... and also our workforce strategy," Coviello said.
As for the displaced residents of International Tower, United Way of Youngstown President Bob Hannon says all but 19 have returned home with most of the remainder still staying with family and friends.
Hannon said he's confident that most of the remaining residents will return to International Towers soon.
Mayor Brown went on to say there will be a celebration sometime in the fall. No official time frame was given for this event.
