Chill Can developers miss deadline as foreclosure looms

According to court documents, the MJ Joseph Development Corporation, who planned to create 230 new jobs to manufacture self-chilling beverage cans had until the end of the day on Monday, August 26 to pay up.
The company owes the City of Youngstown $1.5 million plus interest and MS Consultants $322,907.54 plus interest.
"It's working its way through the legal system," said Dan Yemma, Mahoning County Treasurer. "This latest filing is simply scheduling the sheriff's sale and it gave the company 3 days to pay all of the taxes if they wanted to prevent the sale. We knew they weren't going to pay."
The city told 21 News Monday evening the company did not come up with the money by the end of the business day on Monday. Therefore, the property will be foreclosed and put up for a sheriff's sale.
"Once the sheriff's sale takes place, they still have until then to come in and pay everything," Yemma explained. "As far as the county goes, we will get our taxes paid."
The business planned to manufacture self-chilling beverage cans that could have created more than 200 jobs. The company broke ground on the project in 2016.
"The laws in the State of Ohio are very prejudicial towards the property owner," Yemma explained. "They have endless chances up until the last day to save the property. They had a lot of time to come and make things right."
Back in May, 21 News spoke to a resident of North Lane Avenue where the unfinished project sits who told us he was optimistic that another company could take over the property and do something with it.

"We are hoping to turn the property into something useful for our community," Yemma concluded. "Something that will pay the taxes."
