While Christmas may still be a couple months away, it's never too early to get into the giving spirit.

Starting Sept. 3, the Salvation Army is opening registrations for its Angel Tree program. Registration will remain open until October 31.

The program serves Mahoning County residents only and provides Christmas toys for children up to age 12, as well as food vouchers. You can only sign up with one church or agency for assistance.

Applicants must provide the following information:

- A valid driver's license or state ID

- Either a birth certificate, proof of guardianship or custody papers for all children in the household

- A paystub for the last 30 days with YTD income listed, an ODJFS printout dated within the last 30 days or an SSI/SSD award letter to verify income

- Rent or lease agreement, utility statement from within the last 30 days or a mortgage statement to verify residency

Once a child or senior adult has been registered and accepted as an Angel their Christmas wish list is shared with donors in your community who purchase gifts of new clothing and toys.

The gifts are distributed to the family to place under their family Christmas tree.

The program helps provide Christmas gifts for hundreds of thousands of children around the country each year.

Last year in Mahoning County, the program provided 1,655 children with gifts for the holidays.

Folks can register for the program here.
