Canfield Fair livestock auction benefitting Second Harvest Food Bank

The fun, food, and events continued at the Canfield Fair on Thursday!
Thursday's livestock auction successfully sold off dozens of animals, all while benefiting the Second Harvest Food Bank.
In 2023, Second Harvest Food Bank was able to distribute over 10.5 million pounds of food. Part of the food bank's success comes from events like the livestock auction at the Canfield Fair.
It's the 16th year the Jr. Fair livestock auction benefits our hometown food bank. On Thursday, animals including lambs, goats, pigs and rabbits were auctioned off. Some of the animals are then donated to the food bank to help feed our neighbors in need.
"It's nice for those people that want to purchase and support the kids and they don't have a use for that meat," explained Kimberly Moff, Jr. Fair Manager. "So they go ahead and donate it. And the processor would get that all packaged up for them. It would be delivered to Second Harvest Food Bank and that's given out and distributed to families in need."
The Fair Board told 21 News thousands of pounds of auctioned meat is processed and donated to Second Harvest.
"There's a lot of individuals and businesses that want to support the 4-H program but they don't need the meat," explained Don Snyder, Director of the Canfield Fair Board. "So it's their way of contributing to the 4-H program."
The kiddos in 4-H have been raising their animals since this spring, every year getting them ready for the livestock auction at the Canfield Fair.
"Once you get animals, it's like the everyday process of going out and feeding your animals, taking care and watering them properly so they're healthy enough to make it to the fair," explained Landon Frank, Jr. Fair participant.
"And they work with the animals all year long," Moff added. "Depending on the animals determines how long they do that and they have the animals ready by the time they get to the fair."
Teaching responsibility while feeding our community, one auction at a time.
The Jr. Fair auction continues on Friday: with chickens, turkeys, and cows up for auction.
