YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A Youngstown man convicted of murdering a 24-year-old man and wounding his young daughter can expect to spend a long time behind bars.

Mahoning County Judge Scott Krichbaum on Monday sentenced 22-year-old Vashaud May to life in prison without parole, plus an additional 39 to 44-year sentence.

May was found guilty last week of all charges against him including one count of aggravated murder, one count of murder, three counts of attempted murder, three counts of felonious assault, and one count of having weapons while under disability.

The charges stem from the April 2022 murder of 24-year-old Rawsheem Aponte which also left Aponte's young daughter wounded.

Prosecutors say the incident began when Aponte was on his way to the grocery store with his fiance and kids and stopped at a friend's house on the way. Prosecutors say two cars were outside the house and appeared to be waiting for him.

From there, a chase began with the people in the car shooting at Aponte who was trying to flee. Eventually, he came to a dead end where he was shot and killed. Aponte's fiance and daughter were also wounded. His son was not hurt.

Body camera video from police was shown to the jury during May's trial, which featured officers treating a gunshot wound to the toddler's leg.
