1999: Some 6,000 people from across the nation and the world gather at Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University for the 14th annual Pentecost in Perspective Leadership Conference sponsored by Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church in Youngstown.

International Tube and Steel Industries Ltd. of Hong Kong has signed a contract to buy the former LTV pipe mill on Poland Avenue and intends to resume production.

Scientific studies suggest high school students would get needed sleep if classes started later than 8 a.m.. Still, area principals say starting class later would affect sports and other activities, bus schedules and after-school work. 


1984: Gordon Peter Getty is listed by Forbes as America's richest man with a net worth of $4.1 billion. Youngstown developer Edward J. DeBartolo was 43rd, with assets of $550 million.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency says the City of Youngstown's sludge incinerators at the Waste Water Treatment plant emit more pollutants than the law allows.

The Ohio State University College of Agriculture has honored Robert Hammett of Poland as a distinguished alumni in recognition of his lifelong support of agriculture, soil conservation, 4-H, and other youth-oriented organizations. 
 


1974: Ten Youngstown men, including racketeer Joey Naples Jr., 42, plead innocent to a number of charges before U.S. District Judge Leroy J. Contie Jr. in Cleveland.

The Mahoning County Bar Association endorses Ohio Chief Justice C. William O'Neill for re-election over his challenger, Youngstown Appellate Court Judge Joseph E. O'Neill.

U.S. Rep. Wayne L. Hays, D-Ohio, carries a friend on his congressional payroll for four years as a deputy marshal assigned to patrol the streets of Hays' home town of Flushing. 


1949: Mrs. E.J. Harper of Kenmore Avenue and Miss Blanche Farragher of W. LaClede Avenue are confirmed dead in the fire aboard the Noronic pleasure ship in Toronto.

Congressman Michael J. Kirwan of Youngstown is a Gov. Earl Warren of California guest at the Oregon-St. Mary's football game in San Francisco. Kirwan has been on a two-week tour of the West.

Youngstown steel plants will use Geiger counters adapted by scientists at U.S. Steel Corp. to quickly and accurately analyze alloy elements in steel samples.
