After several hours of deliberations on Friday and Monday, a jury has reached its final verdict in the case of a former Warren police officer described by prosecutors as a "serial rapist."

The jury found Michael Edwards Jr. guilty on several counts of gross sexual imposition, sexual battery and two counts of rape, all with firearm specifications, as well as extortion, theft in office and dereliction of duty.

He was found not guilty of six other rape counts, as well as one gross sexual imposition count and one count of menacing by stalking.

Edwards's attorney Dave Betras tells 21 News he will be appealing this verdict.

Charges were originally filed when one victim came forward with allegations back in January of 2024. This led to Edwards's immediate termination from the Warren Police Department.

Since then, several more victims came forward with their own allegations regarding Edwards.

Nearly all of these victims were either prostitutes or drug addicts. Prosecutors said Edwards took advantage of these factors and threatened to leak sensitive information about them if they did not submit to his sexual advances.

One of those victims said Edwards said things such as "what are you going to do to keep me quiet" and "I'm a cop, you're a junkie. No one will believe you."

Edwards will be sentenced on Thursday, September 26 at 1 p.m. Prosecutor Gabe Wildman says he could face up to 56 to 61-and-a-half years in prison.
