Several blood drives to be held in Mercer County throughout October to support breast cancer
Mercer County, Pa. - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and one non-profit is looking to give back to breast cancer patients through various blood drives in Mercer County.
Non-profit Vitalant is urging folks to come to one of many blood drives being held at various locations in Mercer County throughout October to help those battling breast cancer.
More than 25% of the blood supply collected at these drives goes to aid cancer patients like Loucinda Davis.
According to a press release, Davis has been cancer-free for eight years and talked about how important blood and platelet donations were when she was battling breast cancer.
"In order to receive chemo, your platelets have to be above 100,000 and mine were 9,000. I headed to the emergency room for a platelet transfusion, only to have to wait for platelets to be driven to the hospital from two hours away. I could have died without platelets," Davis said.
You can help by donating blood at any of the following blood drives throughout October:
- Wednesday, October 2 at Greenville High School (9 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
- Thursday, October 3 at Sharon High School (9 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
- Friday, October 4 at 33 Oak Street in Sandy Lake (3 p.m. - 7 p.m.)
- Monday, October 7 at Grove City College in the Kelter Recreation Center Meeting Room (9 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
- Tuesday, October 8 at Meadow Valley Christian School in Greenville (2 p.m. - 7 p.m.)
- Friday, October 11 at Mercer High School (10 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
- Monday October 28 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on South Center Street Ext. in Grove City (1 p.m. - 7 p.m.)
There will be various special promotions throughout the month. Vitalant will be treating donors with an "instant costume" t-shirt through the Donor Rewards program along with a chance to win the Pumpkins Spice Giveaway, which includes one of five $5,000 prepaid gift cards of your choice.
Additionally, between October 27 and 31, donors will have one more chance to receive the shirt through the Donor Rewards program and a chance to win thee Epic Treats Giveaway, featuring one of three $5,000 gift cards.
