Trumbull Commissioners, MetroParks meet Tuesday on Leavittsburg Dam removal study

WARREN, Ohio - Trumbull County officials will meet Tuesday to discuss the results of an independent study on plans to remove the Leavittsburg Dam. The meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Trumbull County Commissioners Hearing Room.
The study, commissioned by Warren Township Trustees and the Trumbull County Commissioners, explored three options for the dam: keeping it as is, removing it, or keeping it with modifications. The dam is owned by Trumbull County MetroParks and has been scheduled for removal in 2025.
MetroParks officials say the dam poses a drowning hazard and negatively impacts the environment. However, Warren Township Trustees argue that removing the dam could cause erosion and damage to nearby property.
The study's findings could influence MetroParks' decision on whether to proceed with the removal. Trustees hope the study will persuade MetroParks to reconsider and explore alternative options, such as modifying the dam to mitigate risks.
The meeting comes as part of a broader effort to restore the Mahoning River to its natural state. Eastgate Regional Council of Governments and thirteen communities along the river are working together to remove remaining low-head dams and improve water quality. The proposed project includes dredging contaminated sediment and removing the Leavittsburg Dam.
