Cortland man killed in six-vehicle crash in Bazetta Township

BAZETTA TWP., Ohio - A Cortland man is dead and several others are injured following a six-vehicle crash in Bazetta Township Thursday afternoon.
According to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP), the crash happened when a 2021 Audi A7 driven by an 18-year-old Cortland man approached stopped traffic at a red light on SR-305.
Troopers say the driver of the A7 struck a 2015 Ford Escape driven by 38-year-old Nicholas Stoian in the rear, pushing the Ford into a 2012 Mazda Mazada3. The Mazda was then pushed underneath a 1998 Saturn SL2.
The Saturn wound up on top of the Mazda after striking a 2011 Chrysler Town and Country, which struck the rear of a 2017 Nissan Murano.
A picture sent to 21 News by a viewer captures the nature of the crash scene. Troopers believe distracted driving to be a contributing factor in the crash. It is unknown if anyone will face charges at this time.
Stoain was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries. The Mazda and Saturn drivers were also taken to the hospital where they were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
OSP was assisted by the Bazetta Township and Cortland Police Departments, as well as the Bazetta Township, Cortland and Champion Township Fire Departments and May's Towing, Harshman's Towing and Triple M towing at the scene.
Drivers are asked to always keep their eyes on the road when behind the wheel.
