1999: Speaking at the Jewish Community Center in Youngstown, Federal Judge Nathaniel Jones says the black and Jewish communities must educate the public about hate crimes, which should be defined and prosecuted. 

Patrick Buchanon, a conservative Republican, is getting strong support in Weirton, W. Va., a steel town down on its luck. Buchanon announced that he is leaving the Republican Party and will run for president on the Reform Party ticket. He also declared he would join the Reform Party, billionaire developer Donald Trump. 

George M. Alexander, who once boasted that he was the mastermind behind James A. Traficant's first congressional win, pleads guilty in U.S. District Court in Cleveland to racketeering and case-fixing. Alexander, 67, could face 12 years in prison. 

 

1984: The United Way campaign raised $2 million of its $2.3 million goal and was extended for 15 days.

A top Mitsubishi official says the Mahoning Valley has a 50/50 chance of landing a plant when the Japanese automaker decides on a product it wants to build in the United States. 

Four American Roman Catholic bishops touring Northern Ireland, including Bishop James W. Malone of Youngstown, condemn Irish-American fund-raising for the outlawed Irish Republican Army. 

 

1974: Campbell police are attempting to link a car with blood stains on the front seat that was found on Wilson Avenue with the reported disappearance of hoodlum Phillip "Fleegle" Mainer, 49.

Austintown police charge a 22-year-old woman with hit-skip in connection with the death of John McNamara, 46, whose body was found in a ditch on Route 46.

1949: Ohio is laying off 109 workers in the division of aid for the aged to balance the department's budget.

Youngstown Mayor Charles P. Henderson accuses the Democratic City Council of playing politics with fair employment legislation. Henderson says he'll sign it if the council passes it.
