Scouts from Youngstown's Hillman neighborhood recreated a bit of Sweden. Among the leaders, left to right, were Mrs. Clarence Strouss Jr., Mrs. R.P. Brenner, Mrs. D.P. Creed, Mrs. Howard Richards and Mrs. John Wertman.

1999: Mill Creek Park directors say a second bow hunt will reduce the deer population in Hitchcock Woods by at least 100 head.

In addition to the academic and job-training programs offered at the Mahoning County Joint Vocational School in Canfield, special interest classes offer instruction to adults in fields such as Asian cooking, floral design, landscaping, wood carving, and foreign languages.

Youngstown police, executing a search warrant for a house at 821 W. LaClede, went instead to 825 W. LaClede and held a middle-aged couple at gunpoint while searching for drugs. The couple filed a lawsuit seeking $1.5 million and noted that there is no house on the street with an address of 821.

 

1984: The Youngstown Salvation Army says 1983 saw record requests for help from the needy, but the trend continued in 1984, with another 40 percent increase in requests. 

Campaign aides for President Ronald Reagan say their polling shows him leading Democratic challenger Walter Mondale in 49 states and "dead-even" in Mondale's home state of Minnesota. 

RMI Co. won a favorable ruling from the U.S. International Trade Commission on its claim that Japan has been "dumping" titanium on the U.S. market, which could be good news for the company's Niles plant. 

 

1974: The Youngstown Board of Education hands a check for $42,935 as payment for busing 9,577 students during September. 

Muhammad Ali scores an eighth-round knockout of champion George Foreman in Zaire to regain the world heavyweight boxing crown.

At Austintown Township's request, Mahoning County commissioners are considering a curfew for boys and girls under 18 in unincorporated areas of the county.

 

1949: Ohio State trounces Northwestern, 24-7, to move into first place with Iowa in the Big Ten race for the Rose Bowl. 

The Youngstown Municipal Railway Co. printed new bus schedules as further service cuts were made on the 29th day of the nationwide steel strike. 

Mrs. Michael Oshelski of Campbell, who faith-healer Kathryn Kuhlman claims to have cured chronic back pain, tells a Vindicator reporter she has been relieved of her symptoms lately but has never met Miss Kuhlman.
