We're learning more details about a two-vehicle crash that left an Austintown Police Department cruiser damaged last week.

Police on scene told 21 News an Austintown Police Department cruiser had turned on its lights to respond to a call and drove through the intersection of SR-46 and Mahoning Avenue.

Police say another car went through that intersection and struck the cruiser on its passenger side. Our 21 News crew at the scene spotted dents on the cruiser's passenger side as it was being towed away.

According to a crash report from Austintown PD, the officer was sitting in the left turn lane intending to make a southbound turn, but he was redirected by dispatch requiring him to turn north.

At this point, the officer activated his emergency lights and began traveling north.

From there, the report states another car traveling westbound entered the intersection and failed to yield for an emergency vehicle with its lights on.

A statement from the driver says a road crew had an earlier section of the street blocked off causing the lane next to him to be full.

"Going 35 mph with the light just turning yellow, I went to enter the intersection and that's when the officer and I collided," the driver said.

According to the crash report, it was ruled that the driver that struck the officer was at fault in the crash.

Crews on scene tell us no one was injured with both the officer and the other driver refusing medical treatment.
