21 WFMJ archives / November 10, 1959 | Youngstown-made steel began rolling out of local plants 65 years ago at the end of a 116-day strike by the United Steelworkers of America. This truck leaving the U.S. Steel Corp's McDonald Mills was loaded with coils rolled but not shipped before the strike began on July 15. The strike idled 500,000 workers and was the longest steel strike in the nation until 1986.

999: The Cleveland Browns avenge their season-opening 43-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 16-15 victory in Three Rivers Stadium. A field goal by Phil Dawson as time expired sealed the win and almost certainly knocked the Steelers out of playoff contention.
More than 2,300 representatives of 29 area churches attended a rally at the Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University. The group ACTION called on businesses and elected officials to stand against corruption.
Plans for a golf course at Austintown Township Park are put on hold after families owning land adjacent to the park refuse to sell.

The vacant McNicholas Transportation Co. terminal at 255 W. Federal Street has been leased by Bruce J. Zoldan, who plans to turn the building into a plant manufacturing sparklers and employing about 100 people.

Dr. Janet E. Del Bene of Girard, an associate professor of chemistry at Youngstown State University, is one of 16 professors nationwide to be awarded a Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Grant.
