Victoria's Vision holds winter clothing drive to help families in need
Winter is fast approaching and the weather is getting colder, but some families in the Valley may not have access to winter clothes to keep themselves warm. That's why a group of community members decided to step in and help.
The Victoria's Vision community group gave away several articles of winter clothing including coats, hats, gloves, boots and more at the Faith Fellowship Church of God in Youngstown Saturday morning.
The group partnered with the Youngstown Police Department to put on this annual event.
Michelle Moorhead, who coordinated the event told 21 News several community members donated their new and gently-used winter clothing, as well as monetary donations to help the cause.
Moorhead went on to say this was all done in the memory of community advocate Victoria Allen, who died in September of 2021.
"She was a big advocate for the [Youngstown] south side community. She did so much for the children and the elderly. She used to do Easter egg hunts, she used to do harvest fests. She was just such a wonderful person that we keep this coat drive going in memory of her," Moorhead said.
Moorhead says this event started in 2018 and has grown so much in the years following.
"We started in a small building on South Avenue. We only had 100 coats for the first coat drive. And now we are over 500 coats, numerous hats, scarves, gloves, shoes [and] boots. So many generous people in the area donate to us. It's just wonderful," Moorhead said.
