1999: Youngstown Mayor George McKelvey says he is open to the suggestion by state Auditor James Petro that the mayor take on oversight of the operation of city schools.

Former U.S. Rep. Lyle Williams is "yesterday's news," says Paul Alberty, who announces he will seek the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant, a Democrat, in 2000.


A 13-year-old Beaver Local Middle School student faces juvenile charges after drawing a swastika on a lunchroom table and writing in a notebook about killing fellow students.


1984: An analysis of election results shows that Sheriff James A. Traficant Jr. won the election to Congress by appealing to disenchanted Democratic voters who had previously supported the incumbent, Republican Lyle Williams.


Fred DeLuca, manager of Youngstown Municipal Airport, says the FAA's refusal to keep its control tower open overnight is crimping air service and inconveniencing area travelers. 


Lt. Col. John Harvey, commander of the 910th Tactical Air Lift Group at the Youngstown Air Reserve Base in Vienna, says that during a recent inspection, the installation received the highest rating ever given to a C-130 Air Reserve installation. 


1974: The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio warns Youngstown State University not to destroy an "enemies list" compiled by the YSU security department since 1968.

1949: Five scantily clad women are bustled through the first real snow of the season to wait for Trumbull County cruisers as Sheriff Ralph Millikin and his deputies raid "Jack's Place," one of two vice dens on Jacobs Road. 


The New Castle, Pa., high school football team turns down a bid for a post-season game in Jackson, Miss., because the invitation specified that Negro players could not complete. The team said it will not go anywhere where halfback Jimmy Altman isn't welcome. 


Photo-recording machines have been installed in Youngstown's main public library, making book borrowing quicker and easier for employees and patrons.
