30 foster homes needed for multiple children and teens in Mahoning County
MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio - Mahoning County Children Services is looking for 30 homes willing to take in displaced children.
Currently, there are more than 230 children in the foster system. With certified homes already filled up, children services needs families willing to take in multiple siblings and teenagers.
“If you ever thought about fostering a child, now is the time," Jennifer Kollar, Public Information Officer for Mahoning County Children Services said. “They're right now facing some of the most vulnerable difficult time … there's a lot of teens out there that could really benefit from having a good, solid, stable loving environment.”
Anyone 18 or older can apply to foster and can include preferences on age or gender you're willing to take in. Application can take up to six months and includes a background and financial check and several training sessions - but service workers don't want the vetting process to turn people away.
“It is an amazing opportunity to really, truly make a difference,” Kollar said.
Children are removed from homes for many reasons including deplorable conditions or drug use with parents. Children services always tries to put the child with a family member first but if no one can take them in they have to be placed in foster care.
Whether it's a temporary stay or a long term one, providing a safe and stable home for a child could be the turning point in their life.
“For that child, for that moment in their life, it is unimaginable the impact that you can have,” Kollar said.
