New $34 million student recreation and wellness center completed at Warren G. Harding HS

After years of planning and construction, the Warren community and Ohio's governor cut the ribbon on a $34 million school wellness center.
The celebration marks more than two years since crews first broke ground at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center at Warren G. Harding High School.
Now, the facility features fitness amenities and a health clinic, operated by Akron Children's Pediatrics.
"Children cannot live up to their full God-given potential which is what we want for them, unless they're healthy, unless they have their medical problems there taken care of," Governor Mike DeWine said.
It's not just the students who will have access to the clinic, the community is also welcomed.
"Having children's hospital here with a fairly large facility also means if someone's got a two year old, three year old not in school, they can bring that child in here now," DeWine said.
DeWine toured other amenities including conference rooms, a gaming lab, a student lounge, and study stairs. The new facility also has a 60-yard turf for various sports activities, cardio equipment, walking and running tracks, golf simulators, a robotics lab, an e-sports gaming lab and a sensory room.
"One of the things that I think we always have to work on is letting our young people know all the good things that they can become," DeWine said. "I mean, how do we expect them to dream it, how do we expect them to work towards it unless they know it exists," he said.
Warren Mayor Doug Franklin is pleased to see this project come together in his city and wants it to benefit the students and the city for years to come.
"It's not just a building, it's a testament to our commitment to nurturing the mind, body and spirit of every student who walks through these doors," Franklin said.
All the new bells and whistles give students something to look forward to. Some of them tell 21 News they're excited to jump right in and put them to good use.
"I feel like we've definitely gotten to all see the excitement and I feel like this building really encapsulates what Warren is and what we really have the opportunity to be," Trinity Walker, senior at Warren G. Harding HS said. "I really wanna thank the school district for really pouring into our school and our community," she said.
"I'm like really into sports and being able to use this facility for sports I feel like it's just really exciting and makes me even more excited to like get into sports and start practicing," Simone Pitts, sophomore at Warren G. Harding said.
Franklin said he wants all young scholars in Warren to know that they have the city's support behind them.
"Their community really believes in them and invests in them and I think that's what the message that this facility sends to our young people and to their parents that this is a community that cares for the well being of their children and our community as a whole," Franklin said. "It will create a foundation for those young people today to be productive members of our society in the future and also just help them to start to reinvest in their community as well, just as our community invested in them," he said.
DeWine is optimistic about the future of Warren's youth, with these new resources being offered.
"We want our kids to be engaged, we want them to be excited, we want them to find a passion for something," DeWine said. "We saw kids in there gaming, look there are jobs that can come out of that," he said.
The clinic part of the facility will offer services such as treatment for minor illnesses, physicals, and vaccines/immunizations to anyone under the age of 21 in the Warren community.
