U-Haul driver that crashed told Youngstown police he was sleeping; also facing unrelated charges
Newly released footage from the U-Haul crash in Youngstown Thursday night shows a 27-year-old Leavittsburg man driving a U-Haul stating he was sleeping when the crash happened.
Officers with guns drawn removed suspect Scott Pelton from the driver's seat of the U-Haul and searched for weapons when the officer asked the driver what he was doing that led to the crash, taking out a utility pole at the scene and crashing into vehicles on a used car lot on McCartney Road in the city. In the video, Pelton can be heard telling the officer, "I was sleeping."
Pelton is due back in on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing in Judge Meghan Brundege's courtroom in Youngstown Municipal Court at 9:15 am on two counts of felonious assault and a pretrial on a charge of criminal damaging/endangering.
Pelton faces charges in Ohio and Pennsylvania after police say he led officers on a chase in a U-Haul truck from Lawrence County to Youngstown, crashing into several vehicles and injuring people along the way.
Youngstown Police were called to a used car lot near Sixth Street, where they say Pelton was being held at gunpoint by officers from Pulaski, Coitsville, and Campbell.
The U-Haul truck Pelton had been driving was damaged after running into a utility pole and half a dozen cars in the used auto lot.
While fleeing police west along Route 422, police say the U-Haul ran into several vehicles along the way, including a church van.
The driver of the church van and two juvenile passengers were hospitalized, as well as four others whose vehicles were struck. Police say there were a total of 14 victims. The police report does not give information on the severity of their injuries.
According to Pulaski Police, Pelton almost ran into one of their cruisers as they were chasing him.
Pulaski Police charged Pelton with one felony count of Fleeing Police, as well as Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering, and DUI. He has not yet had a preliminary court hearing set in Pennsylvania on the charges.
Pelton also faces charges in Boardman Court in two unrelated cases from the November 21 chase and crash.
Pelton is due in Mahoning County Court #2 in Boardman on December 5 at 3:30 pm for a pretrial on charges after being arrested on charges of engaging in prostitution and possessing criminal tools. He was also arrested on November 13 for a misdemeanor charge of possession of drugs charge and will be in Boardman Court.
