First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown is in need of a new retaining wall and solving that issue has become this semester's capstone project for nine YSU engineering students.

They're working in groups of three to construct a plan to fix the wall.

"They're all doing their own complete design of the exact same project so when they presented their mock presentations today, they did a really good job of having their own twist on the project," Robert Korenic, Professor and Coordinator of the civil and construction engineering technology program at YSU, said. "All three groups have different wall designs, one group gave three options and each one of them did their site work and storm water drainage a little bit differently," he said.

Some of the students described to 21 News what plans they had come up with.

"The way that my group is going about it is we're actually just gonna deconstruct the wall and then we're gonna pour a brand new concrete wall behind it and we're gonna hide it under the grate so you can't see it," Kolten Blough, senior engineering student said. "It's gonna do all the retaining support for the wall and then we're gonna rebuild the original wall in front of it," he said.

"We're doing all the sight work around it, making sure that we tie the wall back with straps, making sure that everything's gonna be sustainable for the future," Brandan Serrano, senior engineering student said.

The church can actually use the student's designs as a sort of blueprint for the project.

"They could take these drawings to a company and say hey we worked with three groups of YSU students, can you use this as the basis for our design? So it puts them on the road to getting it done quicker and less expensive," Korenic said.

The students will present their designs to representatives of the church Tuesday morning.
