Enbridge Gas Inc. released a public service announcement relaying safety tips, aiming to keep people safe as snow starts to cover parts of the United States.
Gas meters and external exhaust outlets that get covered by snow and ice can become a hazard to residents if left covered.
Although the meter is built to withstand the weather conditions of winter, plugged external exhaust vents can build up carbon monoxide in the home, leading to serious safety hazards.
Enbridge Gas relays these safety tips during the winter months:
- Keep metering equipment and appliance exhaust vents clear.
- Customers must have clear access to their meters and associated metering equipment, and should free of obstructions.
- Snow and ice should be removed by hand to avoid striking the meter and possibly damaging the unit.
- Do not plow or pile snow up against or on the metering equipment.
In addition to following these safety tips, Enbridge Gas recommends hacing carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home, installing detectors within 10 feet of sleeping areas and replacing batteries alongside smoke detectors and conducting yearly gas heating systems inspections.
