In a statement released by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation December 4, they urge drivers to use caution when driving and avoid unnecessary travel during the continuing storm affecting Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania DOT will also be placing vehicle and speed restrictions throughout the storm.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 restrictions are planned to take effect 12:01 a.m. on December 5 along various interstate locations in Pennsylvania.

Tier 2

I-80 from the Ohio border to the Lamar exit (Route 64)

Tier 3

I-90 along the entire length

I-86 along the entire length

I-79, north of I-80

A comprehensive list of all vehicles that are not permitted on the road during these restrictions, or not permitted without traction devices, can be found in a graphic released as part of the commonwealth's vehicle restriction plan

If drivers must travel, the following safety advice is given by Pennsylvania DOT:

  • Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits conditions.
  • Turn on headlights. If caught in a snow squall, turn on hazard lights.
  • Stay within your lane and increase following distance.
  • Look as far ahead as possible and remain patient.
  • Use your defroster and windshield wipers.
  • Keep mirrors and windows free of snow and ice.
  • During whiteouts, come to a complete stop when you can safely pull off the road.
