The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has implemented additional restrictions on Interstate 80 due to the ongoing winter storm.

A speed limit of 45 mph has been imposed on I-80 from the Ohio border to Exit 212B (Interstate 180, Williamsport). This reduction is in addition to existing Tier 2 vehicle restrictions on the same stretch of highway.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 Restrictions

Tier 2 restrictions prohibit various vehicles, including empty trailers, certain commercial vehicles, and passenger vehicles towing trailers, from traveling on affected roadways. While chains or alternative traction devices are not mandatory under Tier 2, they must be readily available.

Tier 3 restrictions, which are in effect on I-90, I-86, and I-79 north of I-80, are even more stringent. Only loaded single-trailer trucks with chains or approved traction devices are permitted. All other commercial vehicles, as well as buses, motorcycles, RVs, and passenger vehicles towing trailers, are prohibited.

PennDOT urges motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during the winter storm. If travel is essential, drivers should be prepared for hazardous conditions, including reduced visibility, icy roads, and potential delays. It is crucial to increase following distances and plan for longer travel times.
