1999: Under a proposed Ohio law supported by Republican Gov. Bob Taft, improperly stored guns that end up being used to shoot a person could land the gun owner in jail for up to a year. 

Boardman Township has won the first round in a legal battle over the township zoning office's rejection of permits for 15 billboards. A common pleas court magistrate ruled that TTR Media should have gone to the zoning board of appeals before filing suit. 

Ken Flannigan was elected president of United Steelworkers Local 1375 at WCI Steel in Warren, succeeding Dennis Brubaker, who became District 1 staff representative. 


1984: The Ohio Supreme Court will hear the appeal of labor activist Ed Mann, who was convicted in Warren Municipal Court of resisting arrest when police broke up a demonstration outside Trumbull Memorial Hospital during a strike by service employees. 

By a three-to-one vote, members of the Youngstown Education Association set a strike deadline of Jan. 3 unless the Youngstown Board of Education reaches a new contract with teachers.

Our Lady of Hungary Church, 545 N. Belle Vista Ave., is remodeling, and a chair lift will be installed to assist the handicapped. 


1974: Mahoning County commissioners approve a $7.7 million general fund appropriation for 1975 based on the county's estimated income for the year. 

Two Youngstown firemen rescued a 47-year-old Delaware Avenue woman from a fire in her bedroom caused by careless smoking. 

Sidney J. Rigelhaupt, a retiring judge of the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, will hear cases in Trumbull County under a program approved by the Ohio Supreme Court to reduce case backlogs. 


1949: Youngstown's $2 million Spring Common Bridge nears completion and may be open to traffic in as little as 10 days.

Mahoning County will pay $10.75 daily for each indigent person cared for in Youngstown hospitals, an increase from $7.80 in just a year.
