Grove City man accused of leaving children unsupervised while passed out drunk, assaulting girlfriend

A Grove City man is facing multiple charges after police say he left children unsupervised in a home while passed out drunk and assaulted his girlfriend.
According to a criminal complaint, police were called to the 100 Block of Grant Street on January 8 when a woman called to report her boyfriend assaulting her.
When police got to the scene, police found 26-year-old Cody Rishel, who officers say was unsteady on his feet and swaying while loudly yelling. Police say Rishel smelled of alcohol.
Police say Rishel admitted to drinking alcohol, but denied being drunk. However, police say Rishel kept changing his story in regards to how much he had to drink.
According to the complaint, the woman told police she hurried home because her neighbor called her to tell her her children were at his house because Rishel was passed out drunk in the kitchen while he was supposed to be babysitting the kids while the woman was at work.
Police say the children had to go outside alone in frigid cold temperatures to get help from the neighbor.
According to the complaint, the woman confronted Rishel and he responded by pushing her causing her to fall. Police say the fight continued into various rooms of the house with Rishel allegedly shoving her, at one point knocking her into a table.
The neighbor told police that the alleged shoving was much more than just pushing and he wished he had intervened faster. The neighbor went on to tell police Rishel had passed out drunk leaving the kids unsupervised.
"You can't get drunk. There's no such thing as drunk when you got kids," the neighbor said to police.
Rishel was arrested and charged with one count each of endangering the welfare of children and simple assault. He was arraigned on January 9 and appeared in court for a preliminary hearing Wednesday, January 22.
