A Warren Township couple have been charged with animal cruelty after authorities say their dog was found in an emaciated condition and with sores on its body.

Charges were filed on Wednesday in Warren Municipal Court against 46-year-old Jason Carpenter, and 35-year-old Amanda Carpenter of Bechtel Road.

According to Jason Cooke, President of The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project, the four-year-old mixed breed dog was seen on Sunday sitting in the middle of Layer Road in Warren Township.

Cooke says after a two-day search, Warren Township Police found the dog and traced it back to the Carpenter's home.

“The pup is extremely malnourished and looks like he's been through hell and back,” according to Cooke who shared pictures of the dog whose ribs are clearly visible.

The dog, which Cooke has named “Jonas”, was signed over to the care of the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project shelter in Warren.

Cooke says Jonas is being taken to a veterinarian for medicine and a slow feeding regimen until he’s recovered enough to be put up for adoption.
