BOARDMAN TWP., Ohio - Police have charged a man who was shot during what they say was an attempted burglary at a Boardman apartment.

A man who lives on the 100 block of Shields Road tells police he shot Lawrence Simon in the leg after Simon, who also lives in the building, kicked down the door of his apartment at around 2 a.m.

The man who fired the gun told police he feared for his life.

Neighbors told officers they heard a “commotion” including doors slamming before hearing two gunshots.

Police found the gun used in the shooting in a laundry basket.

Simon, who was taken to a hospital for treatment of a leg wound, is being charged with burglary, according to the police report.

The report does not say why Simon is suspected of kicking down the door.
