Investigation into deadly St. Clair Township shootings on Jan. 22 now being handled by OSP

The investigation into the officer-involved shooting in St. Clair Township in Columbiana County has a new agency overseeing it.
The Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to investigate a deadly shooting involving St. Clair Township police officers and a Wellsville man on January 22.
BCI is one of the primary agencies that investigates officer-involved shootings in Ohio; however, in this case, the investigation has been transferred to Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Press Secretary Steve Irvin with the Ohio Attorney General's office told 21 News, "As the investigation developed, a potentially perceived conflict arose, so out of an abundance of caution, BCI returned the case to the St. Clair Twp PD. The case was subsequently referred to the OSHP."
The deadly shooting involved officers from the St. Clair Township police department on January 22, who shot and killed 30-year-old Joseph Como from Wellsville after Como allegedly opened fire on them. The officers were responding to a call of a suicidal man near St. Clair Avenue in the township.
Four-year-old Rosalie Martin, who was inside a nearby business across the street at the time of the shooting, also died after being struck by a bullet.
St. Clair officer Dakota Wetzel, who was struck in the head by a bullet, continues to recover in a Pittsburgh hospital.
