NILES, Ohio - Mosquito Creek in Niles turned into an unexpected cleanup site after oil spilled into it.

John Stephens, Niles fire chief, said they received a call from a concerned citizen who noticed a golden-yellow sheen on top of the water.

Stephens told 21 News that the spill came from a broken transformer from a vacant building nearby. "Trumbull County Hazmat showed up and they tested it [and] determined it was some type of oil."

According to an EPA spokesperson the oil is a Non-PCB transformer oil which is less harmful when spilled. The spokesperson said, "It is estimated that less than 25 gallons was released."

On Thursday, 21 News spotted a cleanup crew at the site.  One of the workers said they worked a total of eight hours to remove the substance.

The fire chief is confident that the spill will not have a lasting impact.

"We formulated a plan to contain the area. [We] put a hard boom through the water. It has collected anything that was running from that pipe,"

According to the EPA, containment booms are used to control the spread of oil to reduce the possibility of polluting shorelines.
