The East Palestine Community Improvement Corporation is asking the public for ideas on creating a new plaza after finalizing the purchase of a former PNC Bank drive-through lot on North Market Street for $100,000.

The EPCIC, a non-profit organization focused on economic development in the village, acquired the property in December. The plaza is envisioned as a central gathering space for events, performances, and celebrations, and a key component of the village's downtown revitalization efforts.

“A key component of the economic recovery plan for the village is downtown revitalization,” said EPCIC President Chris Page. “This property in the center of the downtown will eventually become a key gathering space for events, performances, and celebrations. We still have a lot of work to do to develop the plaza and revitalize the downtown, but securing this property was a critical first step.”

The EPCIC emphasized the importance of public spaces for community connection, citing examples of vibrant downtowns that drive business and population growth.

The purchase was made possible through the EPCIC’s “Brighten Our Future” campaign, which raised $161,500, exceeding initial goals.

Since its formation in March 2024, the EPCIC has been working to improve East Palestine’s image. In addition to the plaza project, the organization has secured an Opportunity Appalachia Grant to develop a plan for repurposing the old freight depot and is collaborating with the village on a “Safe Streets for All” planning grant to pursue funding for streetscape improvements.
