Cortland faces salt shortage amid winter weather

The City of Cortland is experiencing a salt shortage as winter weather persists, city officials said. While crews have been working to maintain roads, the city’s supply is dwindling as salt delivery has been delayed for nearly four weeks.
Mayor Deidre Petrosky said in a memorandum to residents that the city has been forced to use its existing salt supply conservatively, prioritizing major roads and high-traffic areas. Multiple service crews were dispatched over the weekend to address road maintenance, and the city continues to monitor conditions.
The Stormtracker 21 Forecast predicts a wintry mix late Wednesday that could impact the evening rush.
Petrosky acknowledged residents’ concerns and asked for patience as the city manages its resources. She urged drivers to exercise caution, allow extra travel time and be mindful of road conditions.
“Your safety remains our top priority,” Petrosky said.
The city said it will provide updates as soon as the delayed salt delivery arrives.
