A Youngstown woman could potentially face a felony charge after a dog was found frozen to death in a doghouse in her backyard.

According to a press release, humane agents responded to a home on the 700 Block of East Lucius Avenue back in January after receiving a tip about the frozen dog. Humane agents say the homeowner told them she was unaware of any dead dogs at the home.

She added that she could not take care of her dogs due to her physical condition and said her 12-year-old grandson is responsible for feeding them.

Humane agents searched the backyard where they found one boxer mix frozen to death in a doghouse tucked in a corner hidden behind the garage. Agents say the dog was frozen solid to the bottom of the dog house and was chained.

Humane agents say they had to partially disassemble the doghouse to get the dog out.

Additionally, two more dogs were found including an emaciated pitbull chained to the doghouse, as well as one more dog with matted fur covering her whole body.

Animal Charity Coordinator Jane MacMurchy told 21 News the pitbull tested positive for heartworm and also had an eye and ear infection. The homeowner surrendered both living dogs to humane agents.

MacMurchy says charges have not been filed yet, but a felony charge of animal cruelty could be filed depending on the results of an autopsy report on the boxer.
