A case involving alleged an credit card theft and identity fraud led to a police chase and arrest in Boardman Monday night.

According to a police, the case began when police were called to Best Buy in Boardman to speak to a man who told officers that he had received a notification from his bank about fraudulent charges made to his credit card at various retailers totaling nearly $1,000.

Police say the credit card had since been canceled, but the items purchased had already been picked up via curbside pickup services at all but one of the retailers.

Officers spoke to the Best Buy employee that delivered the fraudulently purchased items and described the suspect in the car as a Black male in his mid 20s with curly hair and possibly dreadlocks.

The suspect's vehicle was described as a newer model four-door SUV with a silver strip on the bottom and along the top below the windows.

Police then spoke to an employee at the nearby Target store who said he would alert police if the suspect came to pick up the order. Eventually police say the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Lawrence Newell arrived to pick up the order.

It was then that police tried to conduct a traffic stop near the store and a short chase began with the chase ending at the intersection of Boardman-Poland Road and South Avenue near McAlister's Deli.

Police found multiple virtual reality headsets along with several used cell phones in the vehicle.

Newell was arrested and is facing several charges including multiple counts of misuse of a credit card, as well as one count each of resisting arrest, failure to comply with signal or order of a police officer, identity fraud and obstructing official business.

He was arraigned on all of these charges Tuesday morning and is due back in court for a pretrial hearing on March 4.
