Pennsylvania AG warns consumers of PayPal scam

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday is warning Pennsylvanian of a trending cyber scam that involves scammers sending "invoices" through PayPal.
The scammers use PayPal to send requests to a victim's email inbox, repeatedly sending requests to appear urgent.
The request contains a message attached with a toll-free number and a directive to call that goes to the scammer trying to obtain personal information.
Attorney General Dave Sunday says, "Scammers are well aware that many Pennsylvanians rely on PayPal to send and receive money to their friends and family, or as part of a small business."
He continues, "This is another example of the sophistication of cyber scams, and a reminder to pause and be vigilant before offering personal information or sending money online. Our Bureau of Consumer Protection is standing by to assist Pennsylvanians who are harmed."
Consumers are advised to check the email address and if it's not from "service@paypal.com," ignore it and also check the request even if the invoice appears to be coming from a legitimate address.
Sunday says it's always safe to ignore the request if you do not recognize the payment being requested.
If you receive a concerning invoice, contact PayPal customer service at their website.
You can also file a complaint with the Office of Attorney General to spread awareness about cyber fraud and helping fellow Pennsylvanians from falling victim to similar scams.
