Partnership designed to increase STEM learning opportunity in the Valley

A group formed to increase opportunities for Valley children to learn science, technology, engineering and math has joined a bigger, worldwide team with similar goals.
The Mahoning Valley Regional STEM Ecosystem has partnered with the Global STEM Ecosystems Initiative, a worldwide network focused on improving STEM learning opportunities.
The Mahoning Valley ecosystem, with Campbell City Schools as its supporting organization, was selected for its work in connecting education, business, government and community groups to develop high-quality STEM experiences. The initiative includes over 120 ecosystems across 44 states and eight countries, reaching about 70 million students globally.
The Mahoning Valley system aims to create STEM learning opportunities in classrooms, after-school programs, museums, businesses and community spaces. It has established the Community Literacy Workforce and Cultural Center and launched the state-designated Northeast Ohio Impact Academy.
“The Mahoning Valley Regional STEM Ecosystem is more than a school system—it is a regional model for education and workforce integration, ensuring that students and residents not only dream of success but are equipped with the tools to achieve it,” said Superintendent Matt Bowen.
The initiative has garnered support from regional leaders.
“As our workforce needs continue to evolve, forward-thinking individuals with Campbell Schools are making sure that Mahoning County remains attractive to growing businesses,” said Guy Coviello, president and CEO of the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber.
Paul Olivier, vice president of Mahoning Valley Enterprises at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, highlighted the hospital’s involvement in the ecosystem and the need to attract students to healthcare careers through STEM training.
The Global STEM Ecosystems Initiative, recognized by the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy and cited in the CHIPS and Science Act, facilitates collaboration and innovation among its members.
