Last Sunday's Super Bowl was a record breaker for sport books all over America.

Billions of dollars was bet on the big game and it was estimated that one out of four adults in the U.S. placed a bet on the Super Bowl.

"IN THE FIRST YEAR OF LEGALIZED SPORTS BETTING WE SAW A 55% INCREASE IN CALLS TO THE PROBLEM OHIO GAMBLING HELPLINE AND THOSE NUMBERS HAVE REMAINED HIGH THROUGHOUT," Derek Longmeier, Executive Director of Problem Gambling Network of Ohio, said.

Sports betting is supposed to be fun.

You get to cheer your favorite team on to victory and maybe make a few bucks at the same time.

But for some, it has become an addiction where they lose more than just their hard earned cash.

When sports betting was first legalized, states saw it as a way to increase revenue, saying if we don't allow allow sports betting here, other states will and we will miss out on those tax dollars.

But the National Council on Problem Gambling reports that the risk of gambling addiction has increased since the Supreme Court allowed states to legalize sports betting in 2018.

"IF YOU'RE STILL HAVING FUN AND YOU SET YOUR LIMITS OF HOW LONG YOU'RE GOING TO DO IT AND HOW MUCH YOU'RE GOING TO SPEND AND YOU'RE ABLE TO MAINTAIN THOSE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS THEN THOSE ARE THE HEALTHIER AREAS TO BE IN, Longmeier said. "IT'S WHEN YOU'RE GETTING TO THE POINT WHERE YOU SAY IT'S NO LONGER FUN AND YOU'RE THERE WAY LONGER AND SPEND WAY MORE."

There are factors that can increase the likelihood of a developing a gambling problem.

"ONE OF THEM IS IF YOU HAVE A FAMILY HISTORY OF SUBSTANCE USE, MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS AND CERTAINLY THE AGE OF FIRST USE," Longmeier said. "SO THE EARLIER YOU ARE TO START GAMBLING THE MORE AT RISK YOU ARE FOR LATER IN LIFE."

According to the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio, there are more than 1.8 million Ohioans categorized as low risk, moderate risk or problem gamblers. That's almost 20% of the population and a 300% increase since 2012.

"HELP IS OUT THERE, IT IS POSSIBLE," Danielle Reges, Clinical Program Supervisor, Community Counseling Center, said. "THERE ARE PLENTY OF WONDERFUL COUNSELORS OUT THERE THAT ARE WILLING TO HELP AND ARE TRAINED AND CERTIFIED SO HELP IS OUT THERE."
