2000: The FBI is questioning prominent business people who have provided goods and services to U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. to see if he paid them. Brian L. Stafford, a 51-year-old graduate of Sharpsville High School, has had a front-row seat to history as a Secret Service agent protecting presidents and now as director of the Secret Service.

Junior Nikki Pope's jumper with 7.4 seconds remaining gives Youngstown State University a wild 81-80 victory over Southern Utah, putting the Lady Penguins back on top of the Mid-Continent Conference. 

1985: Teachers in the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown schools vote for union representation by the Youngstown Diocesan Confederation of Teachers in eight schools and against in six schools.  

Youngstown school officials are asking local social service agencies for help in combating drug and alcohol problems that they believe affect at least 4 percent of the city's high school students. 

Mercer County commissioners awarded the Collegeville Flag Manufacturing Co. of Collegeville, Pa., a contract for 9,936 cotton flags for veterans' graves, Worth $4,948. 

1975: Despite cash rebates and other buying incentives, early February car deliveries will be at a 14-year low, analysts predict. 

Youngstown's adult safety patrolmen get their first raise in years. The daily rate for all 68 patrolmen and 10 extras will increase from $7.64 to $8.50.

1950: Mayor Charles P. Hendeson tells representatives of the Youngstown police and fire associations that pay raises are impossible without an increase in the municipal income tax. 

The closing of the Jungle Inn gambling casino in Trumbull County has broken local links to the multi-million-dollar gambling and rackets syndicate.
