2000: U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. says he will ask the federal Bureau of Prisons to move former Mahoning County Sheriff Phil Chance to a prison in Morgantown, W. Va., from the federal prison in Milan, Mich., which Traficant described as "a very rough place."  Chance is serving a 71-month sentence for taking bribes from mobsters. Ira Thomas Associates of Austintown won the Best of Show award in the Akron ADDY competition for a three-part series of commercials the ad agency created for St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center. 

1985: Nearly two dozen Trumbull County officials are told their payroll accounts will be cut by 30 percent. The county has only $12.5 million, while budget requests came in at $16.4 million.

After getting the council's approval to continue Youngstown's interest subsidy program, the Ungaro administration expects a minimum of $2 million more in business reinvestment. 

Two women injured when their car plunged to the ground when an overweight truck caused the Lincoln Park Bridge to collapse a year ago have filed a $3.7 million lawsuit against the owners and driver of the truck and the Mahoning County engineer. 

1975: The Mahoning County Welfare Department received 1,149 more cases in January, and the food stamp program exceeded $1 million, reflecting unemployment, layoffs, and strikes.

The Eastgate Development and Transportation Agency endorses the construction of 2.7 miles of four-lane highway to link Warren's present outer belt, ending at Route 5, with Ohio Route 82 in Howland. 

Warren police are holding a 34-year-old woman for tying up a woman and her five-year-old daughter and setting fire to their apartment on Kenilworth SE. The woman managed to loosen her hands and escape with her daughter before the fire spread. 

1950: The Berlin Reservoir and Milton Dam flood control gates are closed to prevent runoff from 2.2 inches of rain over two days. 

Michael M. Malmer, general manager of the Youngstown Municipal Railway Co., warns the city council that if it passes a proposed ban on passengers standing on buses, waiting periods will be multiplied many times. 

Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp.'s Ohio Works may eventually smelt iron ore from U.S. Steel's recently discovered ore deposits in Venezuela.
