An affordable housing project is looking to build 60 units on Center Road in Poland Township.

Frontier Community Services, a non-profit based in Chillicothe, Ohio, is looking to build an affordable housing complex consisting of 17 one-bedroom units, 20 two-bedroom with one bathroom, and 23 two-bedroom, two-bathroom units along Center Road in the 3800 block.

The complex will also have a community building, exercise and gathering spaces, and a playground, according to Keegan Booth

The non-profit applied on February 12 for a zoning variance change with Poland Township Zoning for the property in the township's 3800 block of Center Road. The zone change request is for a change from Town Center (TC), Residence (R-2), Estate (E) to Residence (R-3).

Keegan Booth, Housing Development & Management Services Director with Frontier Community Services, told 21 News that they are still working with investors and the state regarding the finances for the proposed project.

According to the Mahoning County Auditor site, the 49-acre parcel was acquired in 2022 by New Castle developer Carmen Shick.

The parcel sits on the north side of US Route 224 between James St. and Poland Center Dr.

The next step in the process will be to send the request to the Mahoning County Planning Commission, which will then be followed by a Township Zoning Commission meeting within 20 to 40 days after County approval, followed by a public notification via mail of neighboring homes and businesses within 500 ft. of the proposed complex.

The date and time for a vote on the zoning change request will be posted on the township's website once the process steps are complete.
