Passers-by can now get a clearer view of a mural depicting Frank Sinkwich, Youngstown’s Heisman Trophy winner. Painted on a building along Mahoning Avenue, the demolition of a nearby building has improved the mural's visibility.

The mural is located at 1708 Mahoning Ave. It was painted by Pat McGlone of Overall Paint Company on a building owned by G&S Vending.

Sinkwich, a Chaney High School graduate, went on to play football at the University of Georgia. He received the Heisman Trophy in 1942.

Born in Zagreb, Croatia, on Oct. 10, 1920, Sinkwich played football on Youngstown's West Side. He led the Georgia freshman team to an undefeated season in 1939.

Sinkwich set Southeastern Conference records during his college career. In 1943, the University of Georgia retired his jersey number 21.

Sinkwich played professional football for the Detroit Lions. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1954. He died on Oct. 22, 1990.

The Economic Action Group commissioned the project. Nicholas Chretien, EAG's executive director, said the mural is intended to enhance the neighborhood.

The Economic Action Group plans additional public art projects for Mahoning Avenue. A catalog of public art opportunities is scheduled for release in 2025.
